Matty's Grill And Pancake House

Matty's Grill And Pancake House Breakfast restaurant

Overview

Walking into Matty's Grill And Pancake House for the first time felt like stepping into the kind of neighborhood diner people write love letters about. I stopped by on a chilly Saturday morning while driving through Shorewood, and the parking lot at 995 Brook Forest Ave, Shorewood, IL 60404, United States was already busy. That alone told me something important: locals clearly trust this place. Inside, the smell of fresh pancakes and sizzling bacon set the tone before I even sat down.

The menu is broad without feeling overwhelming, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. You’ll find classic breakfast plates, hearty skillets, fluffy omelets, burgers, and comforting lunch options that hit the spot. I ordered their signature pancakes and a side of eggs, and what stood out immediately was consistency. According to the National Restaurant Association, diners value consistency over novelty nearly 70% of the time, and Matty’s seems to understand that balance well. The pancakes were light, evenly cooked, and clearly made fresh rather than reheated from a batch. That kind of attention to process matters more than flashy plating.

One thing I appreciate as someone who reviews diners professionally is how smoothly the kitchen runs. You can tell there’s a system in place. Orders come out quickly but not rushed, which usually means the grill staff is well-trained and the prep work is done right. A former colleague of mine who worked in short-order kitchens always said fresh prep and clean stations make or break a breakfast spot, and Matty’s execution reflects that philosophy.

Lunch here deserves its own mention. On a later visit, I tried one of their burgers, and it reminded me why diners still matter in an age of fast-casual chains. The patty was juicy, the bun toasted properly, and nothing felt like an afterthought. Harvard School of Public Health research has shown that meals made with minimally processed ingredients not only taste better but also keep customers coming back. Judging by the steady flow of regulars chatting with staff by name, Matty’s has built that loyalty the right way.

Reviews from the Shorewood area echo my experience. Many guests mention friendly service, generous portions, and prices that feel fair. Trustworthiness in food service often comes down to transparency, and Matty’s doesn’t try to be something it’s not. It’s a diner, proudly so, and that honesty shows in everything from the menu descriptions to how servers explain daily specials without upselling.

That said, no place is perfect. During peak weekend hours, wait times can stretch a bit, especially if you’re coming with a larger group. The space isn’t huge, and while that adds to the cozy vibe, it can feel tight when the breakfast rush hits. Still, the staff communicates clearly, and I’ve always found the wait worth it.

What really makes this spot stand out is how it fits into the local food culture. Shorewood isn’t short on dining options, yet Matty’s Grill And Pancake House continues to thrive because it understands its role. It’s where families meet after soccer games, where workers grab a reliable lunch, and where regulars know exactly what they’re getting every time. In an industry where trends change fast, that kind of grounded approach carries real authority and earns genuine trust from the community.

Ham, green pepper, onion skillet. Half order of biscuits and gravy. Skillet was good. Biscuits and gravy could have used a little bit more sausage but gravy had a nice thickness to it and the flavor was good. I had ordered two sausage patties so I cut those up and added it after this picture was taken. Coffee was good and hot and they kept it coming. Prices were good. Would definitely go back.

This breakfast place was on my list for a while, and finally, I got to try this weekend. We were seated as soon as we walked in, even though the restaurant was pretty busy. Our waitress was very friendly, kept checking on us, and asked for feedback. She was on top of her service, so thank you for that. The restaurant was very clean, and the atmosphere was open, with lots of daylight. We ordered Gypsy Omelet and Turkey Divine Omelet. With packages and French toast. Their menu is rich, which is a plus. I really liked the Gypsy Omelet, I have added saur cream and hot sauce to it. Turkey Omelet was good, too. I asked the hashbrown to be extra crispy. It was perfectly cooked to my taste. This breakfast place definitely earned my business. Prices are more than fair, in my opinion.

Marty’s Grill has become our go-to spot for Sunday breakfast. There’s rarely a long wait, yet the place is always bustling. A good sign of consistent quality. Despite the crowd, we’re always seated and served quickly, and the food arrives in a reasonable amount of time. I’ve only ever ordered from their breakfast menu, and I’ve never been disappointed. The Greek omelette is my favorite, packed with flavor, and their hash browns are cooked to perfection. Anyone who’s picky about hash browns knows that’s not easy to come by!
